Workshop & garage sheds - more info
A workshop or garage shed can increase both the value and appeal of your property, as well as providing you with a flexible space for a range of practical purposes. The options here offer plenty of room for DIY, maintenance and creative projects, as well as ample capacity for motorbike or small vehicle shelter, security and storage. Giving you space and privacy, these garage and workshop sheds are also versatile enough for you to add your own personal touch with shelving, lighting and insulation.
How to build a workshop garage
How you build your workshop or garage shed will depend on the material you choose. Our metal workshop sheds are built using Snap-Tite pre-constructed panels and are worth considering if you’re looking for hassle-free installation. An anchor kit, available to purchase separately, can also help you to connect your metal shed to the ground quickly and securely.
For building a wooden garage or workshop shed, there’s a general step-by-step process to follow. This can be summarised as:
- building the shed body
- constructing the roof
- covering the roof with felt
- adding the corner trims
- attaching the fascia boards and finials
- installing the windows (if there are any)
- adding the door fixings.
You can get more information on each of these steps in our guide to building a concrete shed base for more information.
How to set up a workshop or garage
If you’re using your shed as a garage, the most important thing is position. You need easy access for your vehicles – and you. Also think about positioning in terms of utilities if you need to connect your garage to them.
When it comes to setting up your shed as a workshop, make a list of all your requirements and the equipment you intend to use, and then plan the layout to make sure everything will fit. Then it’s down to business – you need to project manage all the jobs required to make your ideal workshop a reality. Making another list will help you to plan and complete the process step by step. Experiment with the layout to ensure it works the best for the projects you have in mind. Planning to have heavy machinery or furniture in your space? Add an extra strength floor pack to your order and be sure you’re in an even more robust building. For more detailed tips on all this, see our guide on how to turn your shed into a workshop.
What's the best lighting for a garage workshop?
The right lighting for your garage or workshop shed will depend on your personal preferences, your intended use and the natural light you will also be making use of. Here are some of the options you can choose from:
- Fluorescent overheads: these are a reasonably budget-friendly and energy-efficient way to light up the inside of a large shed.
- Halogen: this will provide the kind of bright light that’s often required for detailed or delicate projects.
- LED lighting: this is versatile, reasonably cheap and energy efficient.
- Portable lamps: these offer plenty of flexibility but only illuminate limited areas.
