What is an arbour?
Arbours and arches are somewhat interchangeable terms, but an arbour is a piece of garden furniture which, as well as featuring an archway, often has seating too. It’s perfect for training climbing plants over to create a shady spot in which to sit and enjoy your garden. An arbour is a great place for adults to relax, but also works well as an item of children’s garden furniture, providing a semi-enclosed space in which to play or read. Choose from a basic, open structure or opt for something much more substantial with a roof to protect you from summer showers.
What is a pergola?
A pergola has uprights supporting an open roof comprised of a lattice or framework. It’s more substantial than an arbour – a bigger garden construction rather than an item of garden furniture, it’s perfect for training climbing plants over. Vines are a particularly good choice for pergola plantings, helping to create a shaded space which is perfect for outdoor dining and entertaining. As an architectural feature, a pergola makes an excellent focal point for your garden.
