Do I need planning permission for a bike shed?

A bike shed falls well within the maximum dimensions allowed for a shed or garden building, so it’s very unlikely that you would need planning permission to erect one in your back garden or yard. If you live in a listed property, the shed takes up more than half your outside space, or you’re intending to erect it in the front garden, other rules may apply. If you’re in any doubt, always check with your local planning office.

How to secure a bike in a bike shed?

Our bike sheds feature a sturdy padlock bolt which is secured using roundhead coach bolts which can’t be unscrewed from the outside. If you use a quality padlock, this is enough to deter most thieves. Other security measures include replacing hinge screws with round head coach bolts, installing metal backing plates to prevent thieves from levering the hinges and bolt away from the wood, and installing ringbolts inside the shed, to which you can lock your bikes. Which bike shed is best for me?

Ask yourself how many bikes would you like to store, and whether they’re children’s or adult bikes? If you’re looking for a unit big enough to house bikes for a family of four, it might be better to opt for one of our smaller metal sheds, which are windowless and offer a high level of security. If it’s a couple of adult bikes or up to three children’s bicycles, one of our 7x3 bike storage sheds will do the job admirably.

Shiplap or overlap bike sheds?

While there’s a small difference in price, shiplap is the option to go for if you’re looking for airtight protection for your bikes. Not only are shiplap boards designed to allow water to drain away easily, but because they’re tongue and groove boards, they fit together firmly, stopping damp draughts from penetrating – great for stopping your bike frame and components from corroding. Overlap timber still does a great job of protecting your belongings from the rain, but while these boards overlap, they’re not jointed, and air will penetrate. Want more info?
