Garden Office info

Garden home offices are a great option for anyone looking for a versatile workspace that’s contemporary, long-lasting, comfortable and warm. No matter your occupation, a well-built office in the heart of the garden is a great environment for operating at your most productive best. If you’d like to know more about home garden offices, read on for answers to some of your frequently asked questions.

Why build a garden office?

A garden office provides a designated workspace away from the distractions of the main household, fostering increased productivity and concentration. Its proximity to nature offers a peaceful environment conducive to creative thinking and mental well-being while allowing for a better work-life balance by minimising commuting time and providing a distinct boundary between work and home life. The versatility of a garden office extends beyond professional use, offering an adaptable space for hobbies, relaxation, and entertaining, all while adding significant value to your property.

Do you need planning permission for a garden office?

Here at Waltons, we design our insulated garden offices to comply with the relevant planning laws. That said, certain circumstances will require permission – where the homeowner wishes to erect a building in the property's front garden or for listed buildings, for example. If in doubt, you should always make enquiries with your local planning office to check before going ahead with your purchase. In the vast majority of cases, however, no special permission is required.

Do you need building regs for a garden office?

Detached garden buildings with a floor space of less than 15 square metres are considered ancillary to the main house, i.e. not part of your home and are not required to meet building regulations as long as they do not contain any sleeping accommodation.

How do you connect a garden office to the internet?

There are lots of ways to get online in your new garden office. The simplest solution is to use mobile tethering or boost your home's wifi signal. If you’re installing mains power, however, you could use a Powerline network adapter to send the signal through the power cable, or for the fail-safe approach, route an ethernet cable to your office when you install other utilities. For more information on installing utilities in your insulated garden office, please refer to our guide on connecting a shed to the Internet.
