Log stores - more info

A well-designed log store provides just what you need for efficient log management – proper airflow to ensure effective drying and prevent dampness. Additionally, you can strategically stack logs within the structure, contributing to optimal storage conditions and helping to preserve the wood. Find out more by reading our tips on storing logs correctly.

How to stack logs in a log store

The key to stacking logs effectively is good airflow, which helps the logs to dry and prevents the build-up of damp. Accordingly, you should aim to stack your logs neatly but loosely with plenty of air gaps to help with air circulation. It’s also a good idea to stack with the bark side down and the cut sides facing up to help with evaporation. Wood stores are open-fronted, so it’s also wise to position yours so the prevailing wind doesn’t blow heavy rain into the exposed logs.

How to waterproof a log store

Log stores have an open front and slatted sides to enable plenty of air circulation – you don’t actually want a waterproof log store, or the logs inside would moulder and rot. That said, it’s wise to site your store so that the prevailing wind doesn’t blow rain into the front opening and to maintain your store so that the roof continues to keep the water out.

How to store logs outside

If you’re storing logs outside, it’s always best to raise them off the ground by placing them on a pallet or something similar. This stops them from getting wet underneath and is a big help in ensuring plenty of air circulation to help with drying and storage. Always stack logs neatly but loosely, close to but not touching a wall or similar support – again, this helps with airflow. Stack to a maximum height of 3ft – even the best-laid wood piles can occasionally collapse, so always work with safety in mind.
