Traditional greenhouses - more info

Greenhouses provide plants with a nurturing space, out of harsh winds and frost, while still giving them plenty of light. Heat your greenhouse naturally with the sun or add heaters to keep it toasty during the colder months. Experiment with tropical flowers, protect your seedlings, and watch your vegetables start life even when the temperature’s cool outside.

For a modern twist, you can customise your traditional greenhouse with paints and coloured treatments to suit your taste. If you don’t have the time, we can deliver it to you already painted. Choose from various shades in a range of earthy tones.

How does a greenhouse work?

A greenhouse invites sunlight inside, trapping heat and warming the air to keep plants warm. Even on chilly days or when the temperature drops overnight, greenery remains protected from harsh weather conditions. A greenhouse also prevents fruit and vegetables from being eaten by pesky birds.

Where should I put a greenhouse in my garden?

The best site for your greenhouse is somewhere that receives plenty of light throughout the day, so avoid shady spots, like beneath trees and next to walls that block out the sun. Build a level base for your greenhouse from paving slab or concrete. Set it up close to utilities if you want to connect your greenhouse to mains electricity and the water supply.

Is a wood or polycarbonate greenhouse better?

Traditional wooden greenhouses are pleasing to the eye and a timeless classic for any gardener. The weather naturally blends the wood in with your environment, or you can customise it to suit your preference. However, wood does require more maintenance than polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate is a strong, insulated glass alternative that’s treated to shield greenery from UV rays. The lightweight material allows the structure to be composed almost entirely of polycarbonate, often with a lightweight aluminium frame, maximising light potential for warmth and fast growth. They’re often preferable for vegetables, but they don’t have the aesthetic of a wooden greenhouse and tend to be less customisable.
